A Conversation with Bryn Labuschagne on the Evolution of B&R Metrology into B&R 3D Solutions

B&R Metrology, now rebranded as B&R 3D Solutions, is a company based in South Africa that specializes in metrology and 3D printing technologies. Originally established in 2015, the company initially focused on metrology, particularly articulated arms within the Nikon world and CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) equipment. Over time, their portfolio expanded to include 3D printing solutions.

Their decision to rebrand to B&R 3D Solutions reflects their commitment to providing dedicated services and products in both metrology and 3D printing domains. This strategic move allows them to better serve their customers by offering distinct sections for metrology and 3D printing within their product portfolio.

Ahead of their rebrand, we sat down with Bryn Labuschagne, co-owner of B&R 3D Solutions, to chat further.

Q: Can you tell us about the evolution of B&R 3D Solutions since its inception in 2015?

A: Well, we originally formed B&R in 2015 as a metrology-based company, primarily focusing on articulated arms within the Nikon world and CMM equipment. Over time, our portfolio expanded, and about two to four years ago, we ventured into 3D printing with our first printer. As our product range diversified, encompassing various technologies, we felt the need to separate our offerings into dedicated sections for printers and metrology. This led us to establish the 3D Solutions branding to cater to the growing demand in the 3D printing world while maintaining a dedicated section for metrology.

Q: What prompted the decision to expand the 3D printing side of your portfolio?

A: Initially, we weren’t focused on 3D printing; it was more of an incidental development. We considered purchasing a small internal printer for prototyping purposes, particularly for creating jigs and fixtures for our CMM business. However, our interest grew when we connected with a reseller of Edgecam and SOLIDWORKS in Poland, who introduced us to V-shaper printers. While V-shaper was impressive, it was high-end and expensive. So, we explored more cost-effective alternatives, such as the Volumic in the FDM realm. Additionally, we delved into SLA, SLS, and SLM technologies, partnering with brands like NEXA 3D and E-plus 3D for resin-based printing and metal powder-based sintering for plastics and metals.

Q: Machine Tools Africa is coming up, will B&R be there?

A: Most certainly. We are really looking forward to this year’s event as it has been a few years since the event took place. We will be near Stillam CNC Programming Solutions.

Q: Could you elaborate on the range of 3D printing technologies and products B&R 3D Solutions will have on display at Machine Tools African 2024?

A: Certainly. Our product lineup includes various models such as V-Shaper 500 Pro, V-Shaper 270 Standard, Volumic Stream MK 3, Mingda MD-400 and the Nexa 3D XiP Desktop Resin Printer.

We will also have metrology displayed, we will have the LK Metrology Altera CMM 15.7.6 with a SLK laser scanner, 6-Axis Space Arm 3.2m, Leader APC and MPC video measuring machine and the Simscan handheld 3D scanner.

We aim to cater to diverse needs, from compact units to high-performance systems, along with complementary solutions like articulated arms and video measuring machines.

In conclusion, the evolution of B&R 3D Solutions transcends mere business; it embodies a narrative of resilience, innovation, and unwavering dedication. As they continue to push the boundaries, one thing remains clear – their journey has only just begun.
